How to choose the right conversion bits for your miniatures
Let’s face it, sometimes the standard models just aren’t enough. Maybe you want your Space Marine to wield a relic blade that demands respect. Or perhaps you’re building an orc warboss who needs a chainsaw bigger than he is. That’s where conversion bits come in, and honestly, it’s one of the best parts of the hobby.
However, it can be overwhelming. With so many bits out there - from official sprues to third-party kits - how do you actually choose the right ones? Here’s a breakdown to help you kitbash with confidence and avoid a drawer full of “maybe one day” parts.
1. Know your vision
Before you start trawling bit sites or raiding your bits box, ask yourself, “what story do I want this model to tell?” Are you aiming for a grimdark veteran who’s clearly survived a dozen campaigns or a sleek, high-tech assassin? The clearer your concept, the easier it’ll be to choose parts that support it. Mood boards help here - don’t be afraid to save images from forums, Instagram or even movies for inspiration.
2. Stick to one style
Every faction and miniature line has a distinct look. Chaos bits are spiky and baroque while Eldar parts are smooth and elegant. Mixing these can absolutely work but only if it’s intentional. When kitbashing, try to keep consistent design elements like armour panels, detailing style or weapon shapes. If you’re adding a third-party head or arm make sure that it matches the size, proportion and aesthetic of the rest of the model. A mismatch of styles often ends up looking like a bad Photoshop job rather than a thought-through conversion.
3. Scale matters (a lot)
Nothing kills a conversion faster than a weapon that’s wildly out of scale. A sword that’s too thin or a head that’s oversized can throw off the whole model. When using third-party or 3D-printed bits, always double-check the scale. “Heroic 28mm” is not the same as “true 28mm” and Games Workshop’s stuff tends to be on the chunkier side. If in doubt, buy a test bit first.
4. Plan for assembly
Some bits look amazing in theory but are a nightmare to glue in practice. Watch out for overly fragile or awkwardly posed parts that can complicate your conversion. Think about how everything will fit together - will you need to pin parts? Sand down a shoulder to make a cloak sit flush? Some pre-planning can make all the difference.
5. Test fit before committing
Dry-fit everything! Doing this small step can make all the difference. Just a little blu-tack goes a long way in helping you see how parts will actually look before you glue them down. It’ll save you a lot of frustration (and super glue on your fingers).
6. Don’t fear the bits box
Your bits box is a treasure trove. Before you spend money, dig through what you already have. Sometimes the perfect part is already in your collection - it just needs a little trimming or repositioning. Get creative! Cut up two okay-looking parts to make one awesome new one. That’s the real heart of converting.
Choosing conversion bits is all part of the fun with tabletop wargames. Don’t be afraid to experiment and remember, there’s no right or wrong. The “right bit” is whatever helps you carry out your vision. Whether you’re going full grimdark kitbash or just swapping a head for more character, trust your gut and let your hobby knife do the work.
